About Us

The HD2 format of jazz went on the air in the mid-1980s; during the 2000s, the station was branded as "88.1, The One" -- it has continued, uninterrupted after the addition of our extra station. When 88.1 indie started, KNTU Jazz moved to streaming and HD-2. You can stream on this website and Tune In. KNTU Jazz offers hourly newscasts Monday through Friday from NBC Radio (newscasts air on weekends from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and a popular, unique syndicated program called Musical Starstreams that the host identifies as "exotic electronica."

KNTU strives to serve the public interest with news, public affairs, and entertainment programming for the McKinney, Denton, Dallas-Fort Worth area; to provide news and information of community interest about the University of North Texas; and to provide an industry-standards environment in which students learn about radio broadcasting.

KNTU's staff includes volunteers, students who sign up to earn practicum credit toward their degrees, and students who work part time paid jobs in eight middle management positions. All UNT students are eligible to work at KNTU where they will find an excellent opportunity to gain valuable broadcast experience in a variety of areas, including programming and production, news and sports announcing, sales and development, and station administration.

The studios are in the Radio/TV/Film & Performing Arts (RTFP) Building on the Denton campus of the University of North Texas. Media Arts staff members providing guidance to the students: Operations Manager Todd Shannon, Account Executive Rich Edmond, and Chief Engineer Randy Smith.
